Prospect Cemetery Veterans Section

Location: Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, ON

The Situation: Prospect Cemetery has the largest WWI veterans section in Canada. As part of a major commemorative effort, Snow Larc was engaged to guide the rehabilitation of this historically and socially significant landscape. The client possessed incredible artifact materials, giving the opportunity to create bold statement pieces.

The Solution and Result: The significance of this historic site, established in 1917, informed and guided our approach. We coordinated and collaborated with multiple stakeholders including Corporate and Operational Staff, Facility Management, and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The result is a sacred ceremonial ground, respectful of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The client’s artifact materials were used to create a historical vignette with the placement of an anti-aircraft gun and bunker.

This is set back from the central plaza, capturing some attention but always directing visitors to the Cross of Sacrifice, the central feature in the space. Small but important details make this space unique, like the rose coloured granite selected for the stairs and pavers – a subtle nod to the Canadian Landscape and the colours of the Canadian flag.
